Vintage Snake Ring
Throughout history, different civilizations have regarded the snake in many ways: for the Egyptians, it represented royalty and deity; for Hindus, the snake represented sexual passion and desire; the Romans interpreted the snake as a symbol of everlasting love.
The Victorian era popularized snake jewelry after Prince Albert proposed to Queen Victoria with the very first engagement ring, which was in the image of a snake with an emerald-set head. The snake was a symbol of eternal love, making Queen Victoria's betrothal ring the ultimate token of happily-ever-after. As it does today, the snake represented wisdom and eternity during this period and was a popular motif on rings, bracelets, brooches and necklaces.
This size 6 vintage gold ring has been fashioned as a snake with a sapphire "eye" and diamonds along its neck. This ring weighs approximately 2.37g and was made in Italy and is marked "750" for 18k gold.
