An incredibly rare Victorian carnelian seal featuring a skull and crossbones rebus for "Death and Glory", once an emblem belonging to the 17th Lancers regiment, a first generation Lancers military group of front line soldiers from the British Army.
In 1759, Colonel Hale of the 47th Foot was sent back to Britain with the news of General James Wolfe's death at the Battle of Quebec. As a reward, he was commissioned to raise the 18th Light Dragoons. In memory of Wolfe’s demise, the regiment's cap badge was a skull and crossbones, and its motto ‘Death or Glory’. In 1763, it was re-numbered 17th in the order of precedence.
The 17th Lancers Regiment was active between 1759 and 1922. It was a component of the Light Brigade made famous by Alfred, Lord Tennyson's narrative poem "The Charge of the Light Brigade".
A wonderful talisman for courage, perseverance or victory.
This 9k gold cased seal measures just under 1" tall. Intaglio face measures approximately 13mm wide x 11mm tall and weighs 4g.
