Antique Victorian Sapphire & Ruby Gold Crown Charm

Regular price $525.00 CAD Sale

The symbol of the crown is extremely ancient. From earliest times, a protective quality was attributed to it. They acquired this quality from the material from which they were fashioned - flowers, foliage, precious metals and gems, and from their circular shape which referenced the symbolism of Heaven.

In ancient Egypt, only gods and Pharaohs wore crowns. As rulers of both Upper and Lower Egypt, the Pharaohs wore the double crown comprising the white mitre of Upper Egypt set in the red crown of the Delta. These royal and divine crowns became objects of worship and were considered as beings full of power.

In ancient Greece and Rome, crowns were signs of consecration to the gods.  Both priests and victims wore crowns during sacrifices.

Later, the crown came to indicate all degrees of superiority and to reward outstanding deeds or achievements.

This pretty Victorian crown charm is adorned with 2 sapphires and 2 rubies around its base. It is fully hallmarked for Birmingham, 9k, with maker's mark and a date mark for about 1900 (a little difficult to make out the letter).  It measures approximately 17.9mm tall (not including the hanging ring) by 11.6mm at its widest and weighs 2g. You will receive the pictured pendant.
