Antique Art Deco Daisy Oracle Pendant
An exquisite and rare vintage daisy oracle pendant, this medallion is a striking example of French Art Deco sentimentality. It features an applied, three-dimensional stylized modernist daisy, a symbol of the romantic French game "Effeuiller la marguerite" (plucking the daisy).
In relief round the central flower are words from the classic French game, in which one pulls the petals off a daisy to try to determine someone's feelings. On this substantial pendant, love is assured: I love you.... "beaucoup, passionnément, à la folie" - a lot, passionately, madly. The clean lines, square bail, and raised application represent the transition from Art Nouveau’s curves to the bold, geometric elegance of the 1920s and 30s. While many medallions of this era used glass or synthetic stones, this premium version features a natural ruby at its heart. The ruby is meticulously tube-set in solid gold, creating a beautiful contrast against the .800 silver medallion body. It measures 22mm in diameter (without the bail) and weighs 5.06g. The "squarish" bail is a frequent feature of c.1920/30s-era French pendants, reflecting the era's preference for geometric lines. It bears the French crab hallmark for silver used from 1838-1962 (indicating it was manufactured in a provincial workshop outside of Paris) and maker's mark "A(cross)P" in a diamond lozenge for Adolphe Penin.
Adolphe Penin (1888–1985), was a third-generation master medalist and official Pontifical Engraver, with a workshop in Lyon. The Penin dynasty has been a cornerstone of French metal arts since 1830, celebrated for their exceptional precision and artistic depth. This piece bears the official Penin maker’s mark—the initials "AP" surrounding a plain cross - a signature of one of France’s most prestigious families of engravers.
