Antique Georgian Portrait Miniature Mourning Locket Pendant
Regular price$3,100.00 CADSale
This beautiful c.1800 Georgian pendant is a rare and one of a kind mourning watercolor painting. It features a tableau of scenes - in the centre, a woman lays a wreath over two doves on a tomb. The birds represent the human soul and they are being covered by a wreath, a symbol of the victory of the spirit over the flesh and of his redemption. Around the central image are three scenes painted in sepia: one of the woman making a wreath, the next of a woman smiling and placing the wreath (symbolic of immortality) over a flaming heart (symbolic of marital love and passion) and, lastly, a similar scene to the former except rendered in black, indicative of mourning a death. In between these scenes are three small triangles of landscapes, one with a horse and rider. (Is it possible that the deceased died in a riding accident?) The reverse has a copper colored oval which has been decorated with a fabric cross, placed on a background of blue silk.
The colors of the painting are wonderfully vivid. The glass on the front of the locket is slightly domed and the one on reverse is flat. The locket came to me from a collector of mourning jewelry who has been collecting since the seventies. Came to me as 14k gold but, acid tested around 10k.
This pendant measures 67mm in diameter without the bail and weighs approximately 37.4g. In wonderful condition, with a nick and a few scratches to the glass, commensurate with age. The reverse fabric has some light soiling as can be seen in photos.
