Antique Rebus Charm "M Moi 100 CC" - Silver
Rebus pendants were a popular form of romantic or sentimental message jewelry in 18th and 19th century France, using images and letters to form phrases. Often engraved as intaglios on signet rings, fobs, or wax seals, these puzzles were used to convey secret messages, express romantic sentiments, or spell out a person's name.
Here, we have:
M = The letter "M", which sounds like "aime"
moi = meaning "me"
100 = meaning "cent", which sounds like "sans"
CC = the letters "cc", which, spoken out loud, sound like "cessez"
When put together, it sounds like the phrase "aime moi sans cessez", which means "love me without stopping/endlessly" - an achingly romantic sentiment.
This antique enameled pendant was crafted in 800 silver (stamped on reverse), measures 16.2mm in diameter and weighs 2.1g.
