Located in the portico of the Basilica of Santa Maria in Cosmedin in Rome, the Bocca della Verità (Mouth of Truth) is a massive marble disc weighing about 1,300 kg. Dating back to roughly the 1st century AD and made of marble, historians believe the mask was originally an ancient Roman drain cover or manhole lid.  It likely depicts Oceanus, a titan god of the sea, which explains why the mouth, nostrils, and eyes are hollowed out to let water flow through.

In the classic 1953 film Roman Holiday, the Mouth of Truth scene is a famous moment where reporter Joe Bradley (Gregory Peck) playfully pranks Princess Ann (Audrey Hepburn) using the ancient monument's mythical legend - if a liar slips their hand into the mouth, the stone will chomp it off. To demonstrate, Joe confidently places his hand inside and casually pulls it out, pretending nothing happened to prove he tells no lies.

The famous "truth test" isn't ancient Roman - it's a medieval legend. In the Middle Ages, people believed the mouth would chomp off the hand of anyone who told a lie while their hand was inside. Some historical accounts suggest that a hidden executioner would sometimes stand behind the stone with a sword to "verify" the lie by striking the accused person's hand.

Vintage Mouth of Truth pendants are incredibly difficult to find, especially one this substantial.  Weighing 8.52 of 18k yellow gold and measuring 28.3mm, this pendant was crafted by Società Orafa Aretina in the Arezzo gold district, c. 1980s.

SOA was a key player during the "Golden Age" of Italian jewelry exports in the late 20th century. In the 1980s, SOA became famous for "sculptural jewelry." They didn't just make charms; they also made miniature bronzes in gold. They were known for sophisticated finishing techniques, such as the linen or "bark" texture seen on the back of this pendant, which set them apart from mass-market producers. The "bark" or "linen" finish was a signature of high-end Italian work from this era. This was achieved through meticulous hand-chaseing or specialized casting to create a matte, organic surface that diffused light differently than high-polish gold. It made the piece look "found" rather than "made."
