The ouroboros is an ancient symbol depicting a serpent or a dragon eating its own tail. Known as the oldest allegorical symbol in alchemy, the ouroboros represented the concept of eternity and endless return, as well as the unity of time's beginning and end. It has appeared in many ancient traditions, from the Egyptians to the Greeks, through the Renaissance and beyond. To many, the opposite and opposing ends of the ouroboros could be interpreted as the divine and earthly in humans, which, despite being at odds with one another, exist on in the same. It can be compared to the Chinese yin and yang, symbolizing the harmony of opposing forces, as in light and darkness.
These rare and highly collectible ouroboros earrings are Russian in origin, circa 1850s. They bear the Imperial Russian double mark for Moscow 1847-1898 and 14k gold. Each measures approximately 19mm tall x 17mm wide, with a combined weight of 2.6.g. You will receive the pictured earrings.
