This gorgeous neo-classical Georgian locket depicts a grieving woman sitting under an elm tree, holding a plaque with her beloved's initials. Behind her sits a temple, symbolizing strength. The painting is surrounded by pearls, symbolizing tears. The orange trees/sunset in the background make this an especially rare example.
This navette-shaped mourning locket hails from about 1780-1790. The tree and ground cover are enhanced with crushed hair from the deceased. The pendant is set in decorated 14-15k gold and covered by domed glass.
This pendant measures 47.4mm tall without the bale by 30mm wide and weighs approximately 13.8g. The bale is a later addition. The reverse blue glass is missing the central detail that once decorated it.
