This beautiful late 18th century Georgian locket depicts a scene created with sepia and macerated hair on ivory of a woman grieving over the urn of a loved one. Above her is a popular sentiment of the era "Not Lost But Gone Before". The reverse features the plaited hair with an urn overlaid cartouche for the deceased Mr. Thomas Hunter, died 31 Jan1781, aged 80. A beautiful engraved border on each side frames the central works.
The pendant is set in decorated 15k rose gold and covered by convex glass. It measures 42.8mm tall without the ring x 30.4mm wide x 8mm thick and weighs approximately 15.3g. In original condition, the glass has light scratches commensurate with age, the word "Not" and the first letter of "Gone" are smudged and some of the hair at the bottom of the front has come away.
