Antique 19th Century Bavarian Charivari - Silver
An antique 19th century Bavarian charivari pendant. This would have served for ornamentation with Lederhosen. These ornaments consisted of small trophies from game, like teeth, jaws and fangs from wild animals (in this case, a marten) and feathers and claws from birds of prey. The more varied the types of teeth a man wore, the more courage he was said to have as a hunter. They were also worn as talismans for good luck in future hunts.
This 19th century Bavarian Charivari hunting amulet features a full marten jaw set within a cast silver acorn and oak leaf hinged unmarked silver (likely, 800) case. It weighs approximately 13.76g and measures 23.7mm tall (not including hanging bail) and 20mm at its widest. A rare example, especially with full set of teeth.
