Acrostic jewelry was developed to relay terms of endearment to friends, family and lovers using the first letter of each gem to spell the intended sentiment. Begun in the Georgian era, these pieces increased in popularity across Europe during the Victorian era and are still often commissioned and worn today.
Probably the ultimate heart locket is a Georgian Regency acrostic heart. This one is circa 1820, crafted from 15k gold and spells "Regard" in gems (Ruby, Emerald, Garnet, Amethyst, Ruby, Diamond), with an additional central pansy (from "pensée" in French, meaning "thought", ie. thinking of you) dotted with pearls and turquoise, a stone of friendship, with a central ruby and another turquoise in a starburst setting hanging from the large bail. In the Georgian era, "regard" held far more meaning than it does today. "I hold you in the highest regard" would have been more akin to "I love you" or "I'm crazy for you".
On the reverse is a perfectly preserved lock of hair under glass. This locket has been exquisitely crafted and is in incredible condition.
The heart itself measures 27.8mm tall by 25.6mm wide and is 17.6mm deep. It hangs 59mm overalls and weighs 12.3g. You will receive the pictured locket.
