In Roman mythology, Ceres' daughter, Proserpine grew into a beautiful woman. So much so that, one day, her uncle Pluto, god of the underworld, fell in love with her and kidnapped her to the world below. Locked in a room, Proserpine cried and cried and refused to speak or eat knowing that if she ate anything in the underworld she could never leave. Finally, after a week and unable to bear her hunger, she ate 6 pomegranate seeds. Meanwhile, Jupiter sent his youngest son, Mercury, to make a deal with Pluto for the return of his daughter.  When Mercury heard that his sister had eaten 6 pomegranate seeds, he made a deal with Pluto that, if Proserpine married him, she would live as queen of the underworld for 6 months out of the year. However, each spring, Proserpine would return to earth for the other 6 months of the year.

Each spring, Ceres makes the flowers bloom to welcome her daughter and each fall, when Proserpine returns to Pluto, she lets all the crops die until spring. The pomegranate, often represented by garnet, is a symbol of fertility, prosperity, abundance and generosity...
