Antique Georgian Mourning Locket Pendant

Regular price Sale

This stunning Georgian three dimensional locket depicts a grieving widow is comforted by an angel departing from the top of the obelisk tomb and pointing upward indicating she is taking the husband's soul to Heaven. The rays of sunlight mean he will be resurrected or renewed in Heaven.

This navette mourning locket hails from about 1780-1790. It is painted with sepia and watercolor. The trees and ground cover are enhanced with crushed hair from the deceased. The chip near the top is not just painted - the three dimensional chip can be seen where it fell to the ground below. The reverse has the gold initials “MA” and “CA” over plaited hair surrounded by blue enamel. The pendant is set in decorated 15k rose gold and covered by domed glass.

This pendant measures 58.6mm tall without the ring by 38mm wide and weighs approximately 22.4g. In original condition, with three tiny silver studs and a few seed pearls having fallen. The reverse blue glass has some very small chipping near the top edge of the central navette.
