Pomanders were used as early as the fourteenth century as containers for aromatic vinegars and spices to sweeten the air and as an antidote to infection. The word itself derives from the French “pomme d’ambre” meaning apple of amber. (Amber or ambergris is a waxy substance with a pleasant odour).  Victorians used these (and their successors, "vinaigrettes") to  hold cotton wool soaked in an aromatic elixir to diffuse unwanted smells of the era.

This pomander has been crafted in 9k rosy gold and features a turquoise cabochon on the lid, which closes securely.  It is fully hallmarked for maker William Henry Sparrow of Spencer Street in Birmingham , 1916 and weighs 2.8g, Birmingham.  Measuring 30.6mm tall x 11.5mm at its widest, it is in wonderful condition for its age, with wear commensurate with age and use.

Use it to carry a mantra, love note, vitamins/pills, or a sweet scent. Lovely on a chain on its own or layered with your favourite charms.  You will receive the pictured pendant.
