Born April 7th 1784.\". \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMr. Robert Baynes Armstrong, Esq. was a British Radical politician with a colorful career.  He was educated at Clitheroe Grammar School and afterwards at Sedbergh School. From there he proceeded to St. John's College in Cambridge in 1803, became B.A. in 1807, elected a Fellow of the College on the Lupton Foundation in 1809, was called to the Bar of the Inner Temple, and followed the profession of a barrister with considerable success.  In 1836 he became Recorder of Hull, in 1837 Recorder of Leeds, and in 1848 Recorder of Manchester and Bolton.  He was a Bencher of the Inner Temple and a Queen's Counsel. In March 1848 he became the Liberal candidate for Parliament at a bye-election for the borough of Lancaster, and was returned by 636 votes to 620 polled by his opponent, the Honourable E. H.Stanley (afterwards Earl of Derby). It is dated \"Obt: 19th: Feby: A.D. 1785\". The convex glass on the front has been reverse painted with a sun ray pattern and a sun shines above her portrait, symbolizing renewed life. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis mourning piece has been set in silver. Between the multiple layers of finery being worn and the general smells that could linger in the environment, people often  carried with them a small vial of perfume disguised as a piece of jewelry when they were out and about. Most were worn as pendants but, this sterling silver perfume vial was made to hang from a belt. The lyre at the top has a silver loop on the back. The top cross portion of the bottle serves as the cap. It slides off of the lower vial portion.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe bottle portion itself measures 95mm tall by 52mm wide and, including the top lyre portion, is approximately 7 1\/8\" overall and weighs 30.6g. There is a “W” with a tiny cross stamped by the maker on the back of the silver loop as well as on the inside of the lower anchor where the cross cap fits over it. The little bow is a later addition, likely replacing a fitting. During the war, they were modestly made of wool and were offered as lucky charms for soldiers and civilians exposed to bombings and air raids. In order to reap the good luck, however, there were conditions - the dolls had to be given, exchanged or received.  A manufactured doll could not protect the person who made it.  Secondly, they could not be separated or they would lose their powers of protection. It was rumored that the dolls were tenderly named after the nicknames Poulbot and his wife used for each other and they were sometimes accompanied by their child, P’tit Lardon, also known as Radadou.  The dolls remained popular until the 1950s, symbolizing, for some, the inseparable couple.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRintintin made it to America after the war. In September of 1918, Corporal Lee Duncan of the U.S. Army Air Service rescued a German shepherd and her newborn puppies. He nursed them back to health, then gave several of the dogs to fellow airmen. The two he kept he named Nanette and Rin Tin Tin, as his own good luck charms, and brought them back with him to the U.S. The Americanized Rin Tin Tin, and a few of his descendants, would become American film and television stars from the 1920s through the 1950s.\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNénette and Rintintin charms are scarce to begin with, even scarcer accompanied by their child.  These enamel versions were crafted in 18k and weigh 4.4g.
