Antique Rebus Charm "R Venez"
Rebus pendants were a popular form of romantic or sentimental message jewelry in 18th and 19th century France, using images and letters to form phrases. Often engraved as intaglios on signet rings, fobs, or wax seals, these puzzles were used to convey secret messages, express romantic sentiments, or spell out a person's name.
Here, we have:
P = The letter "P"
dessus = The position of the "P" (above) relative to the word below
venez = The word written below
When put together, it sounds like the phrase "P dessus venez", which is a play on words for "Par-dessus venez" meaning "come over" - a romantic or sentimental message that served as an invitation.
This antique enameled pendant was crafted in rose vermeil over 900 silver (stamped on the bail), measures 19.2mm in diameter and weighs 2.7g.
