An extremely rare and beautiful French charm c.1920 featuring the lucky number "13", set into 18k yellow gold with calibrated rubies and rose cut diamonds in a milgrain setting typical of the era.

With a complex history, thirteen as an unlucky number is a very prevalent notion only in the West. In much of the world, it is seen as lucky. Ancient Egyptians considered the number lucky. In Christianity, Jesus had twelve apostles which, including himself, made 13. It is a prime number and, since it cannot be divided into threes, is viewed as a stable number. In India, the 13th day of the Lunar fortnight is known to be highly auspicious and is called Tryodashi. It belongs to Shiva and is said to bestow long life, peace and good fortune. In France, the number was traditionally considered lucky prior to the First World War and was used in numerical form as a good luck symbol on postcards and charms.

This good luck charm weighs 1.2g and measures 18.6mm in diameter (without the bail). French eagle head hallmark on the loop holding the bail. This delicate charm shows wear commensurate with age and use.  Please view all photos. You will receive the pictured charm.
