During the Victorian era, garnets were extremely fashionable. Many believed that garnets enriched the blood and provided the wearer with a long & healthy life. The 19th Century was the peak of Bohemian Garnet Jewelry, named after Bohemia (now Czech Republic) for where they were mined. Placed closely together and covering the entire jewel, the garnets produced a bright and deep color.

This moody Victorian example is set with a beautiful raised cluster of garnets upon garnets. Six tiers glow with foil backed rose cut garnets. This piece still retains its original circular drop, which swings with movement. The garnets are all closed back and set into rose gold gilt over silver.  On the reverse, the elongated pin stem was shortened at some point and the original C clasp has a capped housing for the tip of the pin so that it does not catch or pull on fabric. There is also a hinged pendant loop at the top, to which a newer silver bail has been added.  These tiered pendants were extremely popular gifts during Victorian times, often given as tokens of love or friendship

This pendant measures 60mm tall (without the bail and including the drop) x 39mm at its widest.  It weighs 13.1g. A few prongs missing but all stones secure, two small garnets may be replacements. Overall very good condition with wear commensurate with age. You will receive the pictured pendant/brooch. Chain is not included.
