An achingly romantic ring known as a "gimmel" or "gimmal" ring, which comes from the Latin for twin - "gemmelus". The ring was constructed to be worn separately by fiancées during the engagement period and then joined together to form one band for the wedding, symbolizing the union of two people.

The two bands nest together with a small pin keeping them in place. Frequently, these rings contained hidden engravings of names, wedding dates, or symbolic figures on the flat inner surfaces, often referred to as "alliance à secret".

This antique mid-1800s gimmel ring is a size 7, 2mm high and weighs approximately 2.8g. Bears the French eagle head mark for 18k gold, along with maker's mark.
