A scarce ornate gold open face ladies collar watch circa 1890. The bejewelled cover is the star attraction - old cut rubies and rose cut diamonds arranged in a floral pattern, set into silver on a gold backing. The hanging loop has also been embellished with diamonds matching the lid. The back lid opens to reveal the dust cover marked with the serial number 7530 and French owl head stamps for imported gold and hallmark for maker EHE8cC. Behind a glass case, the white enamel dial has Roman numerals. A very eye catching and functional piece that looks magnificent both on a shorter chain or swinging on a long chain.
This watch measures 23.9mm in diameter, is crafted in silver and 18k gold (tested) and weighs 13.9g. The movement is mechanical with a winding cylinder at the top and is in working order. The watch can be wound by turning the crown at the top and the time can be set by pressing on the notch on the top of the case and pulling up the crown and turning it. Wear commensurate with age and use. The clock face has a fine, hairline crack in the center to 4 o'clock and solder repairs and denting to inner cover. Recently serviced but, as with many similar collar watches of this age, continued movement cannot be guaranteed. In the event the watch stops working and cannot be repaired, I have had my local watch repairman replace another watch's mechanism with new parts so that it could still be used and enjoyed.
