Cosmic Opal Earrings
$1,250.00 CAD
Captured within custom gold settings is a miniature cosmic event. Unlike common opals, these rare Australian Boulder Matrix specimens feature a rich chocolate-brown ironstone host that creates a high-contrast stage for "lightning" veins of electric teal, neon green, and indigo.
Boulder matrix forms when silica-rich water seeps into tiny pores or ironstone cracks over millions of years. This "matrix" pattern - where the gemstone is inextricably woven into its host rock - is a geological rarity, representing less than 5% of all Australian opal production. Because these opals form only in the microscopic crevices of ironstone boulders, this pair is a literal one-of-a-kind landscape that can never be replicated. The colors aren't just surface-level; they have a deep, holographic glow that shifts and ignites as the light hits the teal lightning bolts.
These earrings measure about 5.3mm x 7.1mm and weigh a combined 1.71g. Crafted in 14k yellow gold c.
* CARE:
Because boulder matrix opals are formed within hard ironstone, they are the most durable type of opal, but they still require specific care to maintain their "cosmic" glow.
- Cleaning: Use only warm, soapy water and a soft brush. Never use an ultrasonic cleaner or a steamer, as the intense vibrations or heat can cause the ironstone and opal to expand at different rates, potentially leading to cracks.
- Chemicals: Avoid exposure to harsh household cleaners, perfumes, or hairsprays. Chemicals can dull the surface polish or penetrate the slightly porous ironstone matrix over time.
- Storage: Store them in a separate pouch or a lined jewelry box. While the ironstone is hard, the opal veins themselves are softer and can be scratched by harder stones like diamonds or sapphires.
- Hydration: Unlike some types of Ethiopian opal, Australian Boulder Opals are non-porous and do not need to be soaked in water; doing so can actually damage settings over time.
