In the Roman poet Ovid's (Metamorphoses) famous telling of her story, Medusa was a stunning mortal woman and a priestess in the temple of the goddess Athena. In a bid to humiliate Athena, his bitter rival, the sea god Poseidon assaulted Medusa inside Athena's sacred temple. Instead of taking her fury out on Poseidon, Athena cruelly punished Medusa, turning her hair into venomous snakes and giving her a gaze so terrifying it turned anyone who looked at her directly into stone.

Over time, Medusa has become a feminine icon through a powerful, cultural evolution that shifted her from a villain into a symbol of survival, power, and liberation.

This ring features a hand-engraved shell cameo set into 18k gold.  It measures 19.4mm in diameter, weighs approximately 10.52g and is a size 7.
