Rings showing clasped hands ("fede", Italian meaning "faith") first appeared in Roman times when they represented a legal contract. Symbolizing the union between two people, gimmel rings comprise two or three interlocking bands held together by a pin and were commonly used in 16th and 17th century England to commemorate a betrothal or marriage. Over time, the designs merged and the fede gimmel rings evolved to incorporate three conjoined bands with the center band featuring a symbolic motif – an anchor, a cross or a heart.
This c.1840 ring was crafted in 15k gold (tests) and features 2 clasped hands on individual pie-crust bands with spinel and ruby cuffs opening to reveal a heart on a third band. The three bands are all connected, thus, this ring cannot be sized. It is a size 6.5 and weighs 3.4g. You will receive the pictured ring.
