A stunning late 18th century Sicilian "Quindicino" cluster ring. The name refers to "quindici" meaning 15, for the number of gemstones. Gorgeous table cut rubies have been rub-over set into foiled and closed back settings. The central ruby is set in relief on a circular keyhole element comprising a triple layer forming a floral pattern. The shoulders have been accented with applied ornaments on a decorative band.
This style of ring was made in Italy for over a century, from about 1675 to roughly 1800. They were originally gifted as engagement or wedding rings. The earliest examples feature scalopped, enamelled backs. The central floral cluster has been attached via rivet seen on the reverse, typical of these ring. The notched detail along the bezel edge is a common feature among many Southern European jewels, including Spanish and Portuguese. The Iberian influence on Southern Italian jewelry design, particularly in Sicily, Sardinia and Campania, can be explained by the multiple centuries of Spanish Aragonese, Habsburg and Bourbon rule of the area. While regional or design variations resulted in different bezel styles, gem stones or cuts, the seven-stone arrangement of the bow ring remained unchanged for over a century.
Similar examples of this ring style can be found in the Collection of the Museo d'Arte Sacra Basilica Santa Maria Assunta in Alcamo, Sicily. See photos 8 and 9.
This ring was crafted in 14-18k yellow gold, is about a size 9.75 and weighs 4.8g, with a beautiful patina. The central round cluster measures approximately 16.8mm tall x 15.7mm wide. Hallmarked on the outer band. In wonderful condition for its age. Sizing is not recommended for this ring due to its age and rarity but sizing down can be done by your jeweller by soldering beads on the inner band or, if you absolutely must, via laser soldering, if so desired.
* A gentle reminder that foiled setting should not come into contact with water as it deteriorates the foil.
